History is combined with the modern, where traditional Turkish bazaars mix with modern supermarkets – motor boats combine with traditional sailing ships – the amphitheatre sits alongside a modern cultural centre

Bordering the landward areas, the 56.000 populated town is surrounded by pine forested mountains (the Land of Lights), with a beautiful a modern marina (where local fishing boats and traditional ‘Gulet’ pleasure sailing ships ply their work along the busy promenade) being located to the seaward side

The climate of Fethiye is hot and sunny in summer and during the winter, although the backdrop Taurus Mountains are snow-clad it is extremely rare for the snow to fall in the town

Departing from the marina, Calis Beach is only a boat trip across the bay, with the famous Blue Lagoon of Oludeniz, with its clear waters and natural beauties, only thirty-minute distance by local dolmus

Restaurants are in abundance offering traditional and western fare, boutiques, shops, banks and bars supplement the old central shopping area and town centre

Local Markets are held twice weekly within the town, where the farming communities offer up their fruit, vegetables and other commodities. The ‘Tuesday Market’, being one of the largest in Europe, in no way replicates the usual ‘tourist type’ bazaar, generally associated with other European holiday venues.

 The Fisherman of the town offer their produce within their centrally located ‘fish market’, which also serves as a ready made restaurant – choose your fresh fish and it is served on the platter within minutes

The markets are genuine ‘points of sale’ for the local rural neighbourhood and are worthy of many visits

 

The evenings are lively, but not to be compared with the Spanish or European night life styles, bars and nightclubs are available within the old part of the town.

Complimenting the infrastructure of this long established town are the Turkish residents themselves, of whom politeness and courtesy is a joy to behold.

 is a typical Turkish market and harbour town, not yet lost to the western impact, where local daily life and businesses continue to work alongside the ever-increasing western influences
